Physical Education

West Woodland’s PE program supports the whole child—building strength, confidence, coordination, and lifelong healthy habits. Our PE classes are taught by Katie Barrett and Heidi Nielson.

  • Students attend PE three times a week for 35 minutes.
  • Instruction emphasizes both health and physical activity, guided by the Five for Life curriculum.
  • PE incorporates math, writing, and reading into movement-based lessons to support whole-child learning.
  • Thank you to our family & PTA support to help fund additional equipment.

What do students do in P.E.?

West Woodland students build a strong foundation in physical literacy through the SPS PE curriculum. They learn fundamentals of soccer, basketball, volleyball, kickball, and flag football, along with jump rope, running/track skills, pickleball, and other lifetime activities. Students also develop coordination through juggling, balance challenges, climbing wall activities, and cooperative games, helping them grow confidence, fitness, and a love of movement.

Gym & Indoor Amenities

West Woodland’s gym—renovated in 2021 as part of a major school modernization—is one of the standout features of our campus. The space is bright, spacious, and truly awesome for movement, play, and school-wide events.

  • Features include a rock climbing wall, full-size basketball hoops, open court space, equipment stations, and areas for fitness circuits and cooperative games.

Playgrounds & Outdoor Spaces

West Woodland has two playgrounds updated in 2020 to support active play for all ages:

  • A smaller playground for Kids Inc and Kindergarten, with age-appropriate structures.
  • A larger playground featuring a new play structure, basketball courts, sports fields, a running track, four square, and tetherball.

In addition to PE, all students receive at least 45 minutes of daily recess, which always have 3 adult supervisors.

Field Day

Each June, West Woodland hosts Field Day, one of the most beloved events of the year.

  • Students rotate through fun, inclusive activities.
  • Parents are invited to join favorites like tug-of-war, face painting, and the dunk tank.
Field Day brings the entire school community together and is always a highlight.

PTA-Sponsored Ultimate Frisbee

In the spring, the PTA organizes after school Ultimate Frisbee teams for grades 3–5, offering another fun way for students to stay active and build teamwork. More details are shared with grades 3-5 families in the spring.
