Bike to School Month
Kick off Bike to School Month at the Bike Rodeo!
The Bike Rodeo provides a fun way to learn about safe cycling, get your helmet fitted and your bike checked, and win cool stuff! Come on down on the playground, and join us! This event usually happens in May, so be on the lookout for information!
We have a lot of new and exciting things every year including:
- Bike Works – will be present to collect bikes for under-served youth. Give an old bike new life and support community programming at Bike Works! Bike Works accepts all types of bikes, bike parts and bike accessories. BMX and kids bikes in good condition are in high need. Please consider bringing any unused bikes to the rodeo to donate to Bike Works in exchange for a tax write-off for 2015 and a good feeling in your heart! www.bikeworks.org
- Guests – Jennie Reed, Olympic Silver Medalist Cyclist and World Champion. Jennie discussed what it takes to be an Olympic athlete and talk about cycling on the velodrome and her foundation aimed at getting more kids on bikes. www.jenniereedfoundation.org
- Bike raffle – A few years back, we raffled off a brand new Trek 24” geared mountain bike with front shock from Gregg’s Cycles for one lucky winner valued at $380.
- A Mountain Bike Obstacle Course
We have also had:
- Bike checks provided by Bike Sport
- Helmet fit check
- Bike skills stations with prizes
- Deeply discounted helmet sales
- Healthy snacks and beverages
Come ready to roll rain or shine! The Bike Rodeo is coordinated by our wonderful parents and community members, Adrienne Anderl & Emily Guist
Volunteer at the Bike Rodeo
We need volunteers to help us make the bike rodeo a success. We need help with set-up, registration, running stations and clean-up. We are also in need of 10 x 10 pop-up tents if you have one; please sign up to bring it down or let us know.
Bike to School Month
Become a West Woodland Wheeler for Bike to School Month!
Bike to School Month, sponsored by WW PTA and Cascade Bicycle Club, is a fun event to encourage bicycle commuting and help new riders. When families cycle to school, they:
- Build active, healthy habits into their daily routine,
- Reduce car traffic and air pollution,
- Help students become safe, competent cyclists.
Starting in May, students will tally minutes to and from school. Tally sheets will be posted out side each class with their names on them.
Prizes!
The elementary schools with the highest total number of minutes biked during the month of May will be featured in an article in the Cascade Courier and receive the coveted Golden Pedal Award.
Additional incentives–with a focus on keeping kids safe and active–will be awarded to students that participate at all levels of engagement in Bike to School Month.
- up to 360 minutes: spoke sliders
- more than 360 minutes: reflective bike strap for your pant leg
- The Class with the highest tally their teacher wins a fitbit.
Join hundreds of riders in the Seattle area and thousands of other riders across the country on Bike to School Day. Bike fairies will be on the job handing out special treat for participants.
Bike Fairies Needed! We’re always look for bike fairies to greet kid in the morning by handing out stickers and chocolate kisses on days throughout the month and especially on bike to school day.
